Breaking the first impression using the priming effect

by jalhanda 2023. 5. 28.

We  try to make a good impression on everyone.
So, we must try to lead human relationships in a direction favorable to ourselves, eliminate unnecessary friction, and maintain a positive relationship with the other person.

1. First impressions

1) Why are first impressions important?

A first impression is literally the image you get when you see a person for the first time. A person is sensitive to the first impression to the extent that a person can judge a first impression by liking or disliking in a short time of 0.3 seconds, and the first impression of that person is determined in about 3 seconds. A person with a tough impression has a very bad first impression, so it is misunderstood that he will have a tough personality. Each person's brain accepts all information, and the objective judgment is different. That's why different people think differently and interpret the same situation differently. Nevertheless, the human brain has to make quick judgments, so it determines and concludes the first impression of the person based on unverified fragmentary information.

2) How far is the first impression right?

You can see it in the case studies. This is what Polish-born American social psychologist Solomon Asch actually used to explain the primacy effect.
① Hong Gil-dong: Smart, diligent, impulsive, critical, stubborn, and jealous
② Kim Sabu: Jealous, stubborn, critical, impulsive, diligent, smart
If you look closely, the two items of the same content are written in the exact same content only in reverse order. By the way, actually, after showing these two items separately and asking people to rate their personalities, the average score for "Hong Gil-dong" was much higher than for "Kim Sa-bu". The reason is that the first of "Hong Gil-dong" is "smart". The first of "Master Kim" is "Jealous". So, the evaluation team gave "Hong Gil-dong" a good score saying that he was more likeable.

3) Examples in daily life

Because of this effect, the order in which pros and cons are listed often changes depending on the situation. The most typical case is when introducing someone to others. If you introduce someone with good intentions, you will list the good points first, but if not, in most cases, you will list the bad points first and start peeling the pumpkin seeds. Anyway, people can't know each other 100% forever due to the limits of their cognitive organs, so in the end, they have no choice but to understand each other by seeing only part of it. Therefore, you can only judge more quickly by looking at the first impression.

2. First impressions aren't everything

1) Show your true self

There are times when words or actions are unnatural to make a good first impression on the other person. Moreover, if you have a crush on the other person, you will make more effort to leave a good impression on the other person. You need to be honest with your partner. This does not mean expressing your honesty by ignoring the other person or being rude. It is necessary to be as polite as possible to the other person and to have a more sincere and honest answer when talking about a situation or to ask questions in a non-stimulating manner.

2) The smile of the heart breaks prejudice

There are times when we say "shit". Literally, "rotten smile". While the heart laughs at the opponent, the face shows a smile pretending to be an angel. However, sincerity cannot be hidden. Some have smiles on their faces, some don't. By the way, the person who smiles sincerely has happiness and sincerity towards the other person in the smile. When we talk, we speak clean words that come from the heart. He never loses his smile while performing things such as Under, which is considerate of the opponent, and Reacts to the opponent's words. Let's express happiness in our hearts with a smile.

3) Increase the likeability

① Priming effect

It refers to a psychological phenomenon in which previously encountered information influences the interpretation and understanding of subsequent information. In 1980, psychologists discovered that people easily come up with many related words.

② Example of ignition effect

If you've seen the word eat recently, you're more likely to make the word soup from the word "so_p" rather than soap. Conversely, if you've recently seen the word 'wash', you may have thought of soap before soup. This phenomenon in which words presented earlier affect the processing of words presented later is called the firing effect. In the previous example, 'eat' ignited the thought of 'soup', and 'wash' ignited the thought of 'soap'.

③ Raising favorability using the ignition effect

The opponent decides everything in 3 minutes. You can turn the whole situation upside down in 3 minutes. Even if the other person has a bad first impression of you, you should seize the opportunity to change that first impression. You need to listen to what the other person is saying and find a situation where you can empathize with the other person while keeping your words as sparing as possible. For example,
(B) Do you like movies?
(A) Yes, I like it.
(B) I like movies too, but I don’t think I can go to see them often. By any chance, what is the most recent movie you saw? I saw the
(A) rage.
(B) What? I also wanted to see that movie. how was the movie? When I have time, I definitely watch the movie and talk about it.
(A) I don't remember much.
(B) Looking at the advertisement, they said that Fast and Furious was still worth watching. I want to know too. Please tell me one thing. Show the image of caring for the other person with a soft tone and a kind smile.

④ Breaking the First Impression

Even if the other person made a decision on their own first impression, they break the first impression they decided in a short amount of time.
